Sport Overview

Postponement has been decided for the World Masters Games 2021 Kansai.
The new dates are being arranged.
Please note that the followings are the information before the postponement was confirmed.



An ekiden is an athletics discipline where teams each consisting of several runners engage in a long-distance relay race. Each runner runs to a relay station or the goal and hands the sash to the next runner. In the World Masters Games 2021 Kansai, the course will be divided into a total of 5 or 6 sections each 3km to 5km long.

Age: (1st) 35+, (2nd) 50+, (3rd) 45+, (4th) 40+, (5th) 30+

[Mixed] Orders of runners and Age (6 sections in total)
Age: (1st) W50+, (2nd) M60+, (3rd) M50+, (4th) W50+, (5th) M30+, (6th) W30+

* An athlete can compete in a younger category.

[Team composition]
Team compositions for each event are as follows.
Men’s team: 6 runners / Women’s team: 5 runners / Mixed team: 3 men and 3 women
Each team needs to nominate a manager. Managers are eligible to participate in the events as runners.
Each team can have a maximum 2 extra runners.

Eligibility

Anyone over 30 years of age or older can participate.

Age Requirement

Minimum age is 30 (born on or before 18th May 1992)
In line with the sport-specific rules, an athlete must compete in their designated age group, with your age determined as at 18th May 2022 – the first day of Athletics competition at the Games. For example, if you turn 40 by the first day of competition, you would compete in the 40+ age category.
